Russia is deploying advanced helicopter gunships to Syria to provide security to Russia’s air base near Latakia. The helicopters will also be used to provide fire support for combat search and rescue missions in enemy territory, according to Russian state news agency, TASS.

“As with much of the newer equipment the Russians have deployed in Syria, this will be an opportunity for Moscow to test out its newest helicopters in a real war zone for the first time,” stated a Russian defense ministry source.

The Kamov Ka-52 is a unique aircraft with a coaxial rotor system which provides high maneuverability in a combat environment. The aircraft is designed to counter armor and other softer ground targets on the ground, as well as enemy helicopters. Equipped with a main gun as well as guided and unguided missiles, the “Alligator” is a formidable threat. It can operate at night and all-weather conditions.

More importantly, in light of the recent shoot down of a Russian attack jet as the destruction of a helicopter on the ground during a search and rescue mission, the Ka-52 has a suite of electronic countermeasures to defend against enemy anti-aircraft systems.
