President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama planted vegetable seeds and distributed books at an elementary school Monday for their community-service project to mark the Martin Luther King Day holiday.
The president and first lady visited Leckie Elementary School in Southwest Washington, where they were joined by AmeriCorps volunteers and young people who are being mentored through a White House program. A high proportion of students at the school come from military families.
The Obamas planted seeds indoors in raised beds, with the president commenting, “Spinach is outstanding. … That’s how you stay healthy.” They also distributed bags with books for children, including a copy of Dr. Seuss’s “Oh the Things You Can Do that are Good for You!”
