NEW YORK (AP) - A 25-year-old man has been crushed to death by a falling elevator in Manhattan.

Police say the accident happened around midnight Thursday in a building on Broome Street on the Lower East Side. The victim’s name was not immediately released.

Witnesses tell the Daily News (https://nydn.us/1R1VT2P ) that the victim died after heroically shoving a woman out of harm’s way.



Manuel Coronado tells the newspaper that the man “said ’Happy New Year’ and pushed her out.”

The victim was pronounced dead at a hospital.
