Ignoring a boycott of the Oscars by some black actors, Vice President Joseph R. Biden will attend the Academy Awards on Sunday night to promote awareness of sexual assault.

The White House said Mr. Biden will attend the Oscars because a song written and performed by Lady Gaga has been nominated in a documentary about sexual assault on college campuses.

“The vice president has done a lot of important work” on the issue of sexual assault, said White House press secretary Josh Earnest.

Asked if Mr. Biden planned to devote any attention to complaints about the lack of diversity in the Academy, Mr. Earnest indicated he probably would not, saying he expected the vice president’s appearance to be “relatively brief.”
