The revamped Powerball jackpot continued to build as Wednesday night’s drawing in the twice-weekly game was worth an estimated $236 million.
The winning numbers were 67-21-65-31-64, with the red Powerball being 5.
The $2 tickets are sold in 44 states that, along with the District of Columbia and some U.S. territories.
The drawing came a day after the Associated Press reported that the changes made to Powerball last October that increased the jackpot size had been the second choice of the group that runs Powerball.
The Multi-State Lottery Association approved, but then abandoned, a different set of changes that would have given ticket buyers more chances to win, fearing that they would have made the game too complicated and hurt interest in the drawings.
Nobody has won Powerball since a record $1.6 billion jackpot was split three ways on Jan. 13, and one of the tickets has still not been claimed.
If taken as a lump sum, as most recent big lottery winners have chosen to do, Wednesday’s jackpot would be worth almost $156 million, with federal taxes quickly taking almost 40 percent of that amount and state taxes a possibility on top of that.
