The White House dissented Wednesday from a suggestion that President Obama might appoint himself to the vacancy on the Supreme Court.

“That is a novel one,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest said in response to a reporter’s question. “He envisions something different for himself once he leaves the presidency.”

He said it was “highly unlikely” that Mr. Obama would appoint himself to the seat of the late Justice Antonin Scalia.
