We ate the last of the chili beans and watched the latest Republican presidential debate. The chili beans were good. The debate was a train wreck.

I have a message for the Republican candidates: You people are acting dumber than dirt. Don’t you realize that the other people on that stage are not enemies, they are friends? You need them and they need you. So don’t tell me your friend maxed out his credit card or voted for a bill you didn’t like. I don’t care about those things. Instead, tell me what you will do to get our country out of the mess it is currently in.

Alternatively, of course, you can continue throwing dirt and knifing each other in the back, and eventually one of you will become the nominee. But when crunch time comes, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders or someone else will clean your clock, and you’ll be walking around wondering what happened.

What will have happened is that you’ll have lost, and lost big-time. Your friends will have stayed home, nursing the wounds you inflicted. You will have stood alone, no longer a part of any “we.”

If the GOP loses the election this year it will have been the candidates’ own fault.
