LUCEDALE, Miss. (AP) - A section of Hwy. 98 in George County now bears the name of Sheriff Garry Welford, who was killed in the line of duty in 2010.

Welford was killed as he was helping pursue two suspects. Their vehicle struck and killed the sheriff.

WLOX-TV (https://bit.ly/2gtHRtK ) reports the Mississippi Department of Transportation hosted a dedication ceremony Thursday where dozens of family and friends shared stories and memories about Welford, who served as game warden for years, then twice elected as sheriff.

Welford’s son, Tony, said his father had a tremendous love for George County.

The section of highway named in Welford’s memory is located between the Hwy. 63 overpass and Old Highway 63 in George County.
