CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The Appalachian Mountain Club has withdrawn its plan to build its first White Mountains hut in 50 years.
The club proposed building “Sparkling Cascade,” for hikers to get some rest, a hot meal and a bunk to crash on in a section of New Hampshire’s Crawford Notch. The club said it would be close enough to the main road that people who might not ordinarily get into the mountains could more easily experience it.
The proposal drew mostly negative feedback from hikers and outdoors lovers who contend the region is already overcrowded. Others said the hut rates were out of their price range.
AMC spokesman Rob Burbank said Wednesday while there were many supportive comments, there also were comments from those who didn’t fully favor the concept.
