HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) - A fire that began in an outdoor gas fireplace at a custom home in Henderson caused an estimated $1.4 million in damages and displaced five people.

City spokeswoman Kathleen Richards says in a news release that the fire broke out Friday night at a home near the Rio Secco Golf Club.

The blaze had reached the attic when the first fire crews arrived and they were eventually able to put it out.

Wood framing inside a wall ignited when an outdoor gas fireplace in a courtyard was lit. Richards says the homeowner tried to put the fire out before realizing it was futile, calling the fire department and evacuating the home.
