CORNWALL, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police say it was snowing and the roads were slippery when a vehicle went off the road and hit a tree in Cornwall, killing the driver.
Investigators say the accident happened Thursday afternoon as 69-year-old Robert Fields was headed west on state Route 74.
Fields, of Orwell, was taken to Porter Hospital in Middlebury where he was pronounced dead. The crash remains under investigation.
Police spokesman Scott Waterman tells the Burlington Free Press troopers reported about five slide-offs between Burlington and Berlin on Interstate 89.
The state Department of Transportation planned to have a full shift of trucks on the state’s roads until 10 p.m. Thursday, when the fleet would be reduced to night patrol. Officials say the fleet would return at about 2 a.m. on major highways
