DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - The former deputy city manager for Daytona Beach has been formally charged with soliciting sex from an undercover deputy posing as a prostitute.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (https://bit.ly/2iJW3S7 ) reports that 51-year-old Gary Shimun was formally charged on Tuesday with a second-degree misdemeanor of offering to commit prostitution, lewdness or assignation.

Shimun resigned from his job two weeks ago after he was arrested as part of a sting operation. Authorities say he traveled to a hotel room to meet up with what he thought was a college-age woman after responding to an ad on Backpage.com. Shimun left the room without anything happening after he grew suspicious. Deputies pulled him over on a traffic stop, but he refused to speak so he was let go for the time being.
