NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The New Orleans Police Department’s final recruiting class of 2016, Class 179, has started its academy training.

For the next 26 weeks, the 10 recruits will spend five-days a week in a classroom and enduring physical training.

Police Superintendent Michael Harrison says this is the first time there have been three classes in the academy at once.

Harrison tells WDSU-TV (https://bit.ly/2hppOlW ) the class, which started Wednesday, brings the total of new officers hired in 2016 to 114. He says 109 officers were lost to attrition this year.

He added that police are constantly working to attract and hire people to reach the goal of having a 1,500-officer force.

Class 177 is set to wrap training after Mardi Gras. Class 178 will graduate in March, and Class 179 in early summer.
