LOS ANGELES (AP) - Southern California Gas Co. says there’s no health threat from methane seepage at an underground storage facility where a months-long release forced thousands from their homes.
The utility says methane was detected Saturday near a wellhead at the Aliso Canyon facility in Los Angeles.
The company tells City News Service that measurements taken Tuesday show less than a cubic foot of gas was released.
The utility says recent heavy rains probably released methane trapped in the soil but there’s no odor and the site is a mile from homes.
A four-month-long well leak that ended in February released some 100,000 tons of methane - the largest such release in U.S. history.
Residents of Porter Ranch claimed they were sickened and more than 8,000 families left their homes during the leak.
