SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 17-year-old boy drowned while surfing at Surfside Beach.

Horry County Coroner Robert Edge says Aidan Mendoza of Surfside Beach drowned about 7:30 a.m. Monday.

Surfside Beach Fire Rescue Capt. Prentice Williams tells local media the teen was surfing alone. Two doctors staying at a nearby condo saw Mendoza and pulled him from the ocean.

Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Mendoza was a cross-country runner at Socastee High School.
