CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A Nevada mom who wanted to get homemade holiday treats to her son who is deployed overseas got some help from the governor.

Gov. Brian Sandoval, who was visiting troops in the Middle East earlier this month, personally delivered ginger snap cookies to Ryan Magera, 22, who is in Kuwait as a specialist in the Nevada Army National Guard’s 485th Military Police Company.

“When you’re there in Kuwait - on other side of the world - and get something from home, it’s special,” Sandoval said, according to The Nevada Appeal newspaper in Carson City (https://bit.ly/2i06w8H ).

Sandoval was a law school classmate of Magera’s mother, Margaret Crowley, and has known the family for years. The two ran into each other at Disneyland in October, and Sandoval mentioned his upcoming trip.

Crowley asked if he could drop off the treats during the trip, which also included Govs. Mary Fallin of Oklahoma and Scott Walker of Wisconsin.

Ginger snaps are a special tradition for the family.

“It’s something we make every Christmas,” Crowley said. “We named one of our dogs after the cookie.”

Crowley said she put her work on hold to bake the special order and delivered them to the Governor’s Mansion before Sandoval left for stops in Kuwait, Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates.

The governor said he asked around for Magera at every base he visited before finding him. After thanking the troops in his unit for their service, he pulled out the package of homemade cookies that he’d been storing in a freezer on his plane.

“I think he was a little embarrassed,” Sandoval said. “But I don’t think I’ve seen a bigger smile on somebody’s face.”
