MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermonters are encouraged to start the new year with a hike in a state park.
Several free, family-friendly hiking events are happening on Jan. 1, 2017, around the state. They will be led by professional guides and outdoor educators.
Organizers say pre-registration is not required. Hikers are encouraged to dress for the cold, bring beverages and snacks and snow shoes, if needed.
Information about the hikes can be found online on the Vermont State Parks website .
Locations include Niquette Bay, Underhill and the new Taconic Mountains Ramble.
