EAST QUOGUE, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a 68-year-old woman has died in a house fire on the east end of Long Island.
The fire was reported shortly after 4 p.m. Friday in the hamlet of East Quogue.
Southampton Town police say that officers and firefighters who responded to the fire were met by a man who told them frantically that his wife was still inside.
Firefighters found 68-year-old Linda Berry inside the house. She was dead at the scene.
The man was treated for smoke inhalation. A police officer was treated for an eye injury he sustained trying to gain entry into the house.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Police don’t believe it was intentionally set.
