SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Nearly 145,000 Utah residents have signed up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act’s online exchange this year, a 24 percent jump from last year.

The figures released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services mean Utah has the nation’s largest increase in enrollment through President Barack Obama’s health care law.

Across the U.S., there was about a 7 percent increase in enrollment as 6.4 million customers had signed up for health plans as of Monday. The statistics are for the 39 states served by the insurance marketplace.

The rise in health coverage comes as President-elect Donald Trump and Republican congressional leaders have promised to repeal the health care law.

Open enrollment for 2017 insurance plans ends Jan. 31.
