RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The top leader for North Carolina House Democrats in 2017 says he’ll work to ease the divisive tone at the General Assembly by improving relations with Republicans.
House Democrats on Monday chose Rep. Darren Jackson of Raleigh as minority leader. Jackson is an attorney who entered the House in 2009.
The House Democratic Caucus chose Jackson to succeed Rep. Larry Hall of Durham, who had said he wouldn’t seek the job for the new session. Democrats will hold 46 of 120 House seats when the new session begins in January.
Jackson has been among the vocal opponents of House Bill 2, the law approved in March limiting LGBT rights. He told The Insider state government news service that he can “disagree without being disagreeable.”
