HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Hundreds gathered to remember a veteran Orange County fire captain who jumped last week from an overpass on to a busy freeway and died in an apparent suicide.

During a memorial Monday at the Huntington Beach Pier, his fellow firefighters remembered 41-year-old Capt. Eric Weuve (WEEV) as warm, intelligent and a devoted first-responder.

The married father of two jumped onto Interstate 5 Dec. 13. Weuve’s county fire colleagues were among those who responded to the call of the jumper.

Weuve worked out of a Westminster station and lived in Huntington Beach.

Officials don’t know why Weuve apparently took his life.

The Orange County Register says (https://bit.ly/2hOiHHL) that in 2015, more than 130 firefighters took their own lives in the U.S. Experts say one reason for firefighter suicide could be post-traumatic stress disorder.
