PROVO, Utah (AP) - The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $75 million grant to the Utah Transit Authority to build a 10.5-mile bus rapid transit line connecting Provo and Orem south of Salt Lake City.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said Tuesday the money from DOT’s Federal Transit Administration will cover nearly half of the overall cost of the Provo-Orem BRT line. He says the project will help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution along the growing Wasatch Front.
The new line will run from the Orem Transit Center to downtown Provo, Utah’s third-largest city.
It will include stops at Utah Valley University, Brigham Young University and the Provo Central Station. Both ends of the line will provide connections to the FrontRunner commuter rail and area bus stops.
