SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) - A $600,000 grant has been awarded to Southfield for the installation and repair of sidewalks near three schools.

The Detroit suburb says the Safe Routes to School grant will be used to improve pathways near Thompson K-8 Schools, Yeshiva Beth Yehuda and Beth Jacob.

Work will include new crossings, a pedestrian island and enhanced signals. The funding is part of the Safe Routes to School program, which creates safe walking and biking routes for children.
