PORTALES, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State Police say a man is dead after a car crash south of Portales.

They say officers were dispatched to the accident site around 5 a.m. Sunday.

Police say their preliminary investigation show a vehicle driven by 45-year-old Stephen Rooney of Portales encountered ice on the roadway.



They say Rooney lost control of the vehicle and it collided with a tree.

Police say Rooney was pronounced dead at the scene.

They say the crash is under investigation.
