SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) - A volunteer fire company is hoping authorities can track down the Grinch who stole about $1,000 they had raised through an annual Christmas tree sale.

The funds were in a cash register that was recently stolen from the firehouse of Independent Fire Company No. 1 in Spring Lake Heights. The fire company uses the money it raises through the sale to help maintain the firehouse.

Fire company officials say the ongoing tree sale normally makes a few thousand dollars.

The company’s vice president told NJ.com officials are upset someone would steal from a community organization.

Casey Willms said “it’s about the worst thing you can take.”
