PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A winter storm that has blanketed northern New England with up to six inches of snow is turning to freezing rain as police urge drivers to take caution.
The National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont until Sunday morning, when temperatures are expected to rise.
The snow will turn to freezing rain Saturday afternoon.
Sleet and a thin glaze of ice could cause slippery conditions and some travel difficulties in northern Maine. Parts of central and eastern Vermont are expected to see two-tenths of an inch of ice.
Parking bans have been issued in cities such as Portland, Maine and Montpelier, Vermont. Speeds were reduced to 45 mph on the Maine Turnpike from the New Hampshire border to Augusta.
