CINCINNATI (AP) - The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati will be getting a new president.

Clarence Newsome has announced he will step down effective March 31, 2017. He has led the museum and educational center since 2013.

The center’s board plans a national search to find a successor to Newsome, a longtime academic leader and former scholar-athlete at Duke University. The center says its endowment has grown from $4 million to $10 million during his leadership, and it has added partnerships including with Major League Baseball, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, WGN, and AT&T.

The center along the Ohio River opened in 2004 and focuses on the inspirational “Underground Railroad” network that helped slaves reach freedom and on the continuing fights for freedom around the world.
