RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Light freezing rain has caused hundreds of wrecks in central North Carolina along icy roads, leading to two fatal wrecks in Charlotte.
Police and emergency workers reported more than 100 crashes overnight Saturday in both Raleigh and Charlotte as the drizzle combine with temperatures below freezing for approaching 40 hours combined to create dangerous icy patches.
Charlotte police reported two people died in single-car crashes within about 3 miles and 12 minutes of each other before dawn Saturday. Investigators blamed icy roads for both wrecks.
The freezing drizzle was too light to bring down power lines or tree branches.
Forecasters say temperatures rose above freezing by noon Saturday, melting the ice.
