ROMNEY, W.Va. (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. Ken Hechler’s body will lie in repose at the West Virginia capitol grounds.
Hechler died Dec. 10 at his home in Romney. He was 102. The Register-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2hFYiF4 ) Hechler’s body will be available for public viewing on Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Culture Center at the West Virginia Capitol Complex. A service will follow at 3 p.m. at the Culture Center.
Hechler spent nine terms in Congress, where he pushed for civil rights legislation and fought for coal mine safety and compensation for miners suffering from black lung disease. He was West Virginia’s secretary of state from 1985 to 2001 and was a special assistant to former President Harry S. Truman.
