INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana authorities say there have been dozens of crashes - two of them involving fatalities - due to freezing rain and ice that’s made the roadways treacherous this weekend.

The roads were so slick ice that authorities had to move motorists stranded on an overpass with a ladder.

The Indianapolis Star reported that the city’s police force was urging motorists to stay off the roadways unless it is “absolutely” necessary to drive somewhere.

“Folks help us help you-don’t drive unless you absolutely have to. The roads are extremely dangerous and hazardous to you right now,” the police department tweeted.

The state police said it has responded to at least 180 crashes since late Friday night, including a fatal crash on Interstate 65 near the Interstate 465 interchange on Indianapolis’ South Side. No further details were immediately available on either crash, including how many people died.

WRTV-TV reported that dozens of motorists were stranded on I-465, the interstate that circles the city, after a sheet of ice formed on parts of the roadway. The ice made the road to roadway too dangerous to walk on, prompting Wayne Township and Indianapolis fighters to have motorists climb a ladder off the roadway.

Almost the entire state is under a winter weather advisory through Sunday morning. The National Weather Service says there may be accumulating ice and snow in many parts of the state.
