DENVER (AP) - Federal investigators say the pilot killed in a plane crash at the Eagle County Regional Airport lost control of the aircraft while trying to land in gusty conditions.

The National Transportation Safety Board says 68-year-old Karl Hipp crashed June 5, 2015, while landing in crosswind conditions that likely exceeded what his amateur-built propeller plane could handle. Hipp’s teenage granddaughter was seriously injured in the crash.

The Denver Post reports (https://goo.gl/IOesTJ ) witnesses told the NTSB the plane entered a sharp left turn away from the runway at a very low altitude after initially touching down, overflying the airport’s taxiway and ramp area before hitting the hangar.

The two had flown from the Holyoke Airport in eastern Colorado.
