CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Republican Senate President Chuck Morse has named committee chairs for the upcoming sessions.
Committees help shape policy and revise bills as they work through the legislative process. The Finance Committee and the Ways and Means Committee will have particular power in the upcoming year as lawmakers craft the next state budget.
Sen. Gary Daniels of Milford will chair the Finance Committee, which determines how money is allocated in the budget.
Sen. Andy Sanborn of Bedford will lead Ways and Means, which estimates tax revenues that determine how much money can be spent.
Both Daniels and Sanborn are fiscal conservatives.
Elsewhere, Sen. Regina Birdsell of Derry will run the newly created Election Law and Internal Affairs Committee. Her committee will be the center of attention as changes to New Hampshire’s election laws make their way through the Legislature.
The only Democratic chair is Sen. Lou D’Allesandro of Manchester, who will lead the Capital Budget Committee.
Republicans hold 14 of the Senate’s 24 seats.
House Speaker Shawn Jasper hasn’t yet named committee leaders. Lawmakers return to Concord Jan. 4 for the start of the session.
