Doctors in Amritsar, India, spent five hours pulling over 40 fold-out knives from a patient’s stomach.

A man with a “wild urge” to consume metal downed dozens of fold-out knives over the course of two months before being hospitalized. Surgeons said some of the rusty knives were unfolded when they extracted them from the patient’s belly last Friday.

“We were so nervous. … A small mistake could have taken the patient’s life. In my 20 years of practice, I have never seen anything like it,” Dr. Jatinder Malhotra told CNN on Monday.

It took Dr. Malhotra and his team of doctors two days to create a game plan for saving the patient’s life.

“I’m sorry I let my family down. I’ll be forever thankful to doctors and hospital staff for saving my life,” the 42-year-old patient said.

The man, a father of two, must be cleared by psychiatrists before he is discharged from the hospital.
