President Obama will make his 11th and likely final trip to Asia in early September in an effort to promote his stalled free-trade deal.

The White House said Thursday that Mr. Obama will travel to China and Laos from Sept. 2-9. It’s the first time a U.S. president will have visited Laos, which is hosting two summits of southeast Asian nations.

In China, Mr. Obama will participate in a G-20 summit with leaders from the world’s top 20 industrialized and developing nations. He will meet separately with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The White House said Mr. Obama will use the Asia trip to promote the Trans-Pacific Partnership, an agreement with 11 other Pacific Rim nations that is opposed by presidential nominees Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, and by most Democratic lawmakers in Congress.
