The Senate’s top Democrat insisted Monday that Donald Trump should be forced to take the U.S. citizenship test, saying he’s convinced the GOP presidential candidate would fail it.
Sen. Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, made the call in response to Mr. Trump’s plans to require stricter tests for naturalization, as part of his foreign policy plans. Applicants for citizenship would have to demonstrate fealty to American values such as pluralism and tolerance, The Associated Press reported.
Mr. Reid said Mr. Trump, who claims wealth of some $10 billion, “inherited everything from his father.”
“The fact is, Donald Trump is nothing more than a spoiled, unpatriotic drain on society who has earned nothing and helped no one,” Mr. Reid said.
The current citizenship test is chiefly a review of civics and history, though applicants for citizenship are also supposed to show they are “attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the United States.”
