A preliminary magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck near New Caledonia in the South Pacific early Friday, prompting a tsunami warning.
A warning of “hazardous tsunami waves” was issued for coasts within 1,000 kilometers of the epicenter by the National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, but quickly retracted.
“The 7.6 mag #earthquake near the Loyalty Islands no longer poses a #tsunami threat,” the center tweeted shortly after 10 p.m. EDT.
