Powerball continued to build Wednesday night toward the kinds of numbers now needed to catch people’s eyes, as the numbers were drawn for a $148 million jackpot five weeks after the last big prize was won.
The winning numbers were 65-28-49-60-4, with the red Powerball being 25.
If taken as a lump sum, as most recent big lottery winners have chosen to do, Wednesday’s jackpot in the twice-weekly game would be worth almost $98 million, with federal taxes quickly taking almost 40 percent of that amount and state taxes a possibility on top of that.
The $2 Powerball tickets are sold in 44 states, along with the District of Columbia and some U.S. territories.
The Iowa-based Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs Powerball and other games for dozens of states, continued to reel from a game-rigging scandal Wednesday as Tommy Tipton, a former Texas justice of the peace, turned himself in to face charges.
His brother Eddie, the MSLA’s former security director, was convicted last year of fixing a $16.5 million Hot Lotto jackpot and faces more charges. Tommy Tipton is accused of benefitting from his brother’s digital manipulation of drawings to receive $1.2 million in winnings that were officially claimed by others.
