OPINION:
Thank you for publishing “How fracking reduces greenhouse gases” (Web, April 10). The op-ed was an extremely important piece to publish because many of the same people who want immediate action on climate change oppose fracking. Mr. Moore’s piece clearly demonstrates that those two belief systems are incompatible.
Using natural gas is the only practical way to immediately reduce carbon-dioxide emissions. The United States derives only 2.1 percent of its total energy from wind and solar combined. These alternative energy sources are expensive and unreliable. The only way we can realistically transition completely away from fossil fuels is to use nuclear energy, and those facilities take about a decade to permit and build.
