OPINION:
Robert W. Merry’s recent Commentary piece (“McKinley, a mountain no more,” Web, Aug. 31) was a disappointing, weak surrender to the Obama administration’s unlawful renaming of Mount McKinley. Obviously, Mr. Merry has no problem with the administration picking which laws it will enforce and which laws it will ignore.
Mr. Merry’s idea that all we have to do is remember President McKinley’s legacy and the renaming of the mountain will be OK is nonsense. For more than 100 years and for millions of Americans, Mount McKinley has been the majestic symbol of a grateful nation’s tribute to a much-beloved, martyred president. This renaming is an insult not just to the state of Ohio, but to all patriotic Americans. Are we a nation of laws or aren’t we?
