LOGAN, Utah (AP) - Utah State University has apologized to students after they were ordered to erase pro-life messages left in chalk near the school library.

The Herald Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1WyxiCz ) that campus police ordered the group to erase the drawing earlier this month. It included 897 chalk hearts, calls for defunding Planned Parenthood and ending abortion and quotes from religious and political leaders.

USU spokesman Tim Vitale says it was a mistake for campus police to regulate political expression. He says they were confused about a policy that the school is working on clarifying.

Vitale confirmed an account posted by “Melissa” on a pro-life website. Melissa wrote that an officer told her the drawings amounted to vandalism because the students didn’t get permission before making them.
