Student barred from sports team appeals to Supreme Court

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - A Helena student is suing the Montana High School Association after being banned from playing on his school’s football team.

The Independent Record reports (https://bit.ly/1NRisE8 ) student Tyler Taylor appealed the ban in district court and is now taking the case to the Montana Supreme Court.

According to the association’s bylaws, anyone who receives a high school equivalency diploma is ineligible to play on a sports team.

Taylor passed a high school equivalency test at the Trapper Creek Job Corps in May while earning dual credit at a Missoula high school. He was 17 at the time.

Taylor’s attorney says his client, who returned to Capital High School for his senior year, shouldn’t have been kicked off the team because he didn’t meet the age requirement for the equivalency diploma.
