President Obama met Thursday with three Americans who subdued a terrorist on a Paris train and praised them as heroes.

At a meeting in the Oval Office, Mr. Obama said the three men “ended up engaging a potential catastrophic situation and pinning down someone who clearly was intent on doing doing a lot of harm to a lot of people, inflicting terror on the French people.”

“Because of their courage, because of their quick thinking … a real calamity was averted,” Mr. Obama said, saying the trio “represent the very best of America.”

U.S. Army Specialist Alek Skarlatos, 22, U.S. Air Force Airman First Class Spencer Stone, 23, and Anthony Sadler, 23, a Sacramento college student, were on a train from Amsterdam to Paris on Aug. 21 when gunman Ayoub El-Khazzani, 26, began firing a Kalashnikov assault rifle. He shot one passenger before Airman Stone and others tackled him.
