German police on Thursday shot dead an Iraqi man, whom prosecutors saw was a “suspected Islamist” after he stabbed a policewoman in Berlin.
The attacker, whom prosecutors identified as Rafik K, had previously been convicted of planning a terrorist attack against former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, a prosecution spokesman told Agence France-Presse.
Police responded to a call in the western Berlin district of Spandau, where the attacker was reportedly acting aggressively toward passersby.
When a policewoman approached him, he stabbed her with a knife, seriously wounding her before her colleagues opened fire and killed him, AFP reported.
National news agency DPA reported the man had removed an electronic ankle monitor he had been ordered to wear following his 8-year prison sentence.
In the 2008 case, Rafik Mohamad Yousef was one of the three Iraqi men convicted in the terror plot.
