SYLCAUGA, Ala. (AP) — Authorities said an Alabama sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a state prison escapee over the weekend.

Prison officials said 23-year-old Derick Davis walked away from a residential transition center where he was serving his sentence in Birmingham in July.

Davis was shot to death by a Talladega County deputy in his hometown of Sylacauga about 2 p.m. Saturday. It’s not clear what led to the shooting.

County officials turned over the investigation to state police, who aren’t releasing details.

Corrections spokesman Bob Horton said Davis was sentenced to three years in custody in January as a youthful offender. Details on the case weren’t immediately available.

A woman who identified herself as Davis’ mother, Patricia Davis, told WIAT-TV she can’t get any information about her son’s death.
