ANALYSIS/OPINION

Devon Allman

“Ragged & Dirty”

Ruf Records

Bluesy and raucous, as befits any artist with the surname “Allman,” Devon Allman gets down and dirty on “Ragged & Dirty.” Mr. Allman, the son of legendary Allman Brothers Band founder Gregg Allman, continues the good family name on this release for Ruf Records.

“Can’t Lose Em All” is suitably mournful, while “Traveling” offers up a unique blues/funk mixture. “Midnight Lake Michigan” is a deep, bluesy freestyle marvel, and Mr. Allman’s strumming on “Back to You” is reminiscent of the height of Eric Clapton’s guitar virtuosity.

The album is rather uneven in song quality, but when Mr. Allman is at tip-top form, as on “Ragged,” the bumps in the road can be forgiven. “Leave the City” closes out the album with a more downtempo country sound.

Mr. Allman will be appearing at the District’s Gypsy Sally’s Sept. 30. Tickets are available.
