A person of interest brought in for questioning in connection to a string of shootings along an Arizona freeway is not the prime suspect, authorities said Saturday.

The 19-year-old man from a Phoenix suburb was detained Friday at a convenience store near Interstate 10, where 11 shooting incidents, targeting vehicles traveling the busy road, have occurred since Aug. 29.

Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves declined to say what led police to question the man, the Associated Press reported. The man has been booked into jail on an unrelated marijuana possession charge.

“This is an open investigation, and we are going to go where it leads us,” Mr. Graves said.

The series of confirmed shootings along the same eight-mile stretch of I-10 has shaken Phoenix motorists. Many have avoided freeways since the shootings began.

Eight of the cars were hit with bullets and three with projectiles that could be either BBs or pellets.

No one has been killed. A girl who was riding in one of the vehicles was cut by glass when a bullet shattered the car window.

Earlier this week in a press conference, Col. Frank Milstead, director of the state’s Department of Public Safety, called the shootings acts of “domestic terrorism” and urged members of the public with any information on the matter to come forward.
