Police say a security guard shot a man inside Union Station Friday afternoon after the man stabbed a woman during an argument and then turned on the guard.

Accounts of gunfire heard within D.C.’s busy transit station began emerging on social media around 1 p.m. Friday, but police quickly confirmed that there was “no active shooter” at the scene.

Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Lt. Sean Conboy confirmed that a woman was stabbed by the man during a domestic dispute inside the station.

A security guard who witnessed the attack began to chase the man, but he said the man was still carrying a knife and turned to accost the guard. The guard then opened fire, striking the suspect, Lt. Conboy said.

After hearing gunfire, people ran from the building while others reportedly hid inside stores within Union Station. Images emerged on social media of crime-scene tape inside the building cordoning off an area near the Amtrak boarding gates. An Amtrak spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Tim Wilson confirmed that at least one person was transported to a hospital from the scene with critical injuries. He said preliminary information indicated that the person transported had suffered gunshot wounds.

Emergency personnel on the scene were also evaluating a second person for injuries, Mr. Wilson said.
