WASHINGTON — A Washington hospital says a patient who died after an altercation with security guards had not been officially discharged and was being escorted back to the hospital when the interaction occurred.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Monday that the man left the hospital Sept. 29 and walked into another building on the hospital’s campus. The hospital says he was being escorted back by one member of the security team and his nurse. Two other security officers joined them and an altercation took place. The hospital didn’t say what led to the altercation. The man died Thursday.

The hospital did not say what the man was being treated for or release his name. The hospital says the two security officers involved have been placed on administrative leave during an investigation.
