(2) Why Theology Matters, by Matt Capps (Baptist Press)

“Theology fuels our devotion to God and our passion for sharing the Gospel. A solid theological vision of God and the Christian life is a powerful tool for mission. Imagine if every Christian were a good theologian. Not just a good theologian, but a good theologian in the distinctively Christian sense. Theology matters for your church because theology is for everyone. Every Christian is a theologian.”

(3) What Does Oprah Believe?, by Diana Butler Bass (Washington Post)

“The show reveals how religion itself is shifting, how we are living through a period of intense spiritual democratization. In all the world’s religions, older forms of remote and hierarchical authority — not to mention the very idea of a distant and monarch-like God — are being challenged by ordinary people as they pray, worship, walk pilgrimages and seek the divine in nature and neighborhoods. Across the planet, people are taking responsibility for their own versions of meaning and, in the process, are remaking faith in ways that are more inclusive, more personal, more connected to the natural world and more attentive to their community.”

***Looking at maps of world religions, I think it is a stretch to say that people all across the globe are remaking their religions in their own image. I think it is fair to say that interpretation is wishful thinking from an Oprah-North American, first-world perspective.

(4) Ross Douthat writes about The Plot to Change Catholicism:

“Speaking as a Catholic, I expect the plot to ultimately fail; where the pope and the historic faith seem to be in tension, my bet is on the faith. But for an institution that measures its life span in millennia, “ultimately” can take a long time to arrive.”
