HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — The Tidewater Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen is pushing for a monument to the pioneering squadron that helped integrate the Army Air Forces during World War II.
The group is asking the Hampton City Council to consider a memorial at Air Power Park that would include three replica fighters suspended above a walkway and arranged in formation, The Daily Press reported.
T.J. Spann, president of the Tidewater chapter, said strong local ties to the all-black squadron are little known. A memorial would help tell the story, he said.
Spann said the Tidewater area of Virginia has many original documented Tuskegee Airmen.
Tyrone Davis heads the chapter’s memorial committee. He said the group needs to raise about $2 million to get the project off the ground.
